TROMPE L'OEIL

'Trompe l'oeil' is the French term for the art of creating painted 'illusion', using highly skilled techniques of detailed realism painting, mathematical proportion, perspective, and true to life tonal values.  The end result can transform a flat wall into a surreal three-dimentional illusion.

This is a section of a large trompe l'oeil mural that Jill painted in a residential foyer. A monochromatic color scheme creates the illusion of 'inlaid stone' throughout the foyer, with Renaissance inspired images to highlight foyer entryways.  The illusionary 'sculpture' was painted from photographic refferences of Michaelangelo's 'Leah' sculpture on the Pope Julius the II tomb located in Rome, Italy.  The faux painted marble, stone and architectural details were designed to complement the setting.
